C. N. R. Rao Conferred Bharat Ratna

He is the third scientist after C. V. Raman and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to be given the honour.

The Government of India has conferred the Bharat Ratna 2013, the highest civilian award in India to Prof. Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao FRS. He is the third scientist after C. V. Raman and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to be given the honour.

An authority on solid state and structural chemistry, Dr. Rao’s work on transition metal oxides led to the understanding of novel phenomena and the relationship between materials properties and their structural chemistry.
He has also made immense contributions to nano-materials over the past two decades, besides working on hybrid materials. Dr. Rao has Honorary Doctorates from 60 Universities worldwide, and has authored about 1,500 research papers and 45 scientific books.

C. N. R. Rao has authored a number of books for NBT, India including Understanding Chemistry and
Learning Science (4 vols.).
